Leo’s horrified face when he saw her told Ffion everything she needed to know. They can’t possibly be working together, only Ffion hasn’t thought of how to avert it yet. Sorry, boss, I happened to bang the DC you assigned me to – can I swap with someone? …
‘The body was found on your side,’ Leo says to Ffion.
‘He was reported missing to you.’ With Cwm Coed so close to England, it’s hard to avoid the occasional collaboration across the border. And Ffion has seen them being handed Cheshire cases and rubbing their hands together on several occasions.
‘Lloyd owns a holiday resort on the English side of the lake,’ explains Leo Izzy. ‘He was last seen there last night at a party.’
‘The Shore,’ Ffion adds, although neither of them is listening to her. ‘They’ve been arguing about the building plans for years.’
Izzy pulls the sheet away and all three stare at the dead man. ‘He’s not in a great state,’ says Izzy. …
Ffion leans her forehead on the leather steering wheel and exhales slowly. So it’s true: Rhys Lloyd is dead. He really is dead.
Thank God!

The Wild Girl

Morgan was a wild girl in a godforsaken village at a beautiful lake in Wales. When about fourteen she got pregnant, but the baby was hidden … The father never learnt anything about his child … Morgan finally pulled her socks up and became a police detective. She even married, but it didn’t last long.

Now she is single living at her Mum’s house, however, only temporarily. She likes to work on her own, her boss and her collegues are rather far away in the next bigger village/town while Morgan is responsible for all the trouble in Cwm Coed and around the beautiful lake. The village may be godforsaken, but there are also tourists during summer and there are new villagers in new posh residences. So there are always events which she has to pay regard to.

Morgan knows anybody and anything around her field of activity which is an advantage, however, also creates a disastrous impact when Morgan’s private life is concerned. Often she likes to draw the curtain over … evidence … when she thinks of potential nasty results for herself, her family, her friends, friends of her family … extravagating. She is on her own meaning that there are no colleagues who might get skeptical. Her boss is far away – from her point of view – and seems uninterested – also from her point of view.

Brady made his way from uniformed police into the CID, but is stranded now. His boss is nasty, discriminatory, offensive and racist – Brady is of colour. He is divorced with a small son whom he meets too infrequently because his former wife and he feud with each other. His apartment is dull and he is lonely.

So … suddenly there is a murder case which cannot assigned neither to Wales nor to England. Morgan and Brady meet in the morgue on New Year’s Day when the post-mortem is due. Well … they don’t meet for the first time because on New Year’s Eve they met in a bar and finished the evening in Brady’s bed – of course both were informal with false names and phone numbers … It’s like a ice-cold shower outpouring all over them – virtually.

They are not amused, but they have to co-operate. Even if there weren’t any mutual memories any co-operation between the police and detective units in Wales and England wouldn’t be welcome. Morgan feels as if anybody wants to disturb her private playground, Brady is not fond of driving into Wales and walking the wilderness around the beautiful lake. However, they cannot give up working the case.

Really quickly the case evolves from a missing person case (after a wild party on New Year’s Eve!) to a tragic accident case (somebody drunken drowned in the beautiful lake!) and then to a murder case. While Brady doesn’t know anything about the victim concerning Morgan the murder victim is well-known … and there is some unfinished business between them.

The victim was born and bred in Cwm Coed, became a famous opera singer living in London, just having returned to Cwm Coed for leisure in one of the posh residences. Who might have a grudge against him?

Brady isn’t born yesterday and he soon realizes some foul play of Morgan, tampering with evidence … and being uneasy with the case and especially the victim. Soon Morgan fills him in on the events in the past. Finally, together they unearth the truth about this New Year’s Eve party, the fateful events … and the murder. Unfortunately some more secrets of the village, its inhabitants and Morgan and her family etc. are revealed.

Morgan and Brady move on … Morgan finds a new home for herself, starts dating although secretly raving about Brady. Unfortunately some of her foul lay is revealed and she is forced to work in the office together with her colleagues … no longer allowed to do her own thing. Brady clarifies his situation with his ex-wife and enjoys more time with his son. He changes over to a new department and is happy with his work.

… and then there is the next murder case also shared between Wales and England. Guess who meets? Morgan and Brady have to team up to solve the case. Again it’s an investigation involving people from Cwd Coed, Morgan’s family and friends … although the main hub is a location cut off from the outside world for creating real-time Tv where some strangers meet to get kicked out one by one until the finalist bags the prize money. This is the breeding ground for mischief and violence.

Afterwards Morgan and Brady realize that there might be some joint future … Let’s wait for the next novel!
