Getting Involved in Cases

McCallum is a brilliant forensic pathologist working in London. He is cocksure of himself and straightforward. It doesn’t matter if it concerns his professional life or his private affairs. Maybe he is not the favorite partner for the police guys, maybe also his boss, the head of the department, is not happy with him sometimes (or more most of the time). However, McCallum is successful and at the end that’s all that counts for anybody.

Nevertheless the way to solving a murder case is laborious and investigation efforts often lead to wrong deductions and false accusations. Only at the end McCallum and his team have – let’s just call it so – a sudden inspiration which is checked, verified and which leads to the evildoer.

McCallum is not an uncommitted party in the game of murder investigation. Let’s say it isn’t only about carrying out perfect postmortems, applying newest technology in analysis, looking for hidden details in the corpse – it isn’t the pure clinical approach. McCallum is devoted to solve the case. Sometimes he knows more about the victim – especially when it is a person living in his personal hemisphere. Sometimes he personally gets involved in the crime – of course he is innocent. Suspense is not only created by the case, but also by the daily lives of McCallum and his team.

The murder cases vary from family affairs, love affairs, unauthorized tests of medication, acts of greed, acts of revenge … There is often more than a single victim. The police detectives are always busy to get a grip on the case from all possible points of view. McCallum whirls across the scene and kills suspicions as well as reveals new aspects. It’s always a mess – fuelled by McCallum.

More than once McCallum is attacked and becomes some sort of collateral damage or even almost a victim. His life is dangerous and only saved at the last moment. Unfortunately also his team is involved sometimes … risking their lives – or at least their career.

McCallum has an interesting private life. He lives in a solid relationship, but there are always other women who keep an eye on him when he rushes through London streets at night on his motorbike. All this ends not well … For some time McCallum pities himself after his relationship has broken down – especially after his partner had to face death because of one of his cases. Finally, however, there is a happy end for McCallum and …

The series not only tells us McCallum’s story, but also some stories of his team members and his boss. All this on a more private level extends all over the seasons, while each episode starts with a new murder case.

The series is from mid of the 90s, but it’s as exciting as if created only two, three years ago – not 30 years ago.
