Somewhere in the south of Arizona, near the border to Mexico, next to New Mexico, is Cochise County, a sparsely populated region in the desert area. Joanna Brady’s husband took part in the election to become the next sheriff, but he was killed before. So out of the moment Joanna Brady decides to run for the office instead of her husband and despite all opposition she wins and becomes soon a respected sheriff. Nevertheless she consistently has to fight in a male dominated administration, when she tries to clean her area of responsibility – and especially when struggling to whitewash her husbands’s name, who was accused of dirty deals.

Irgendwo im Süden von Arizona, nahe der Grenze zu Mexiko, nahe New Mexico, liegt Cochise County, eine dünn besiedeltes Gebiet in der Wüstenregion. Der Ehemann von Joanna Brady kandidierte für die Wahl zum nächsten Sheriff, doch er wurde vorher getötet. Daraufhin beschliesst Joanna Brady, anstelle ihres Mannes für das Amt zu kandidieren, und trotz aller Widerstände gewinnt sie und wird schnell eine geschätzte Amtsinhaberin. Dennoch hat sie in einer von Männern dominierten Verwaltung immer wieder zu kämpfen, wenn sie versucht, ihren Verantwortungsbereich sauber zu halten – und vor allem, wenn sie darum kämpft, den Namen ihres Mannes reinzuwaschen, der schmutziger Geschäfte kurz vor seinem Tod beschuldigt wird.
